Sample of Supermarket Offerings

At the northern end of Kensington Market sits Supermarket, a venue of many functions. My brother, DJ Class!ck, spins a monthly-ish party (Market Fresh), in the back they screen films and live bands play, but most recently I there with friends to enjoy the patio, sip some beverages and have some nosh.

The food is ordered a la dim sum – filling out a menu with golf-sized pencils – and many items have an Asian-inspired theme or twist. This week we indulged in some of my favourites…

supermarket bar restaurant toronto kensington market poutinePoutine. Gotta love poutine! This dish is poutine plus with chunky cut fries smothered with robust cheddar cheese curds and Guinness-braised beef. Finger licking good.

supermarket bar restaurant toronto kensington market crab shrimp wonton tacoShrimp and crab wonton tacos were quite nice, though a little on the blander side. The only note is that they come open-faced form makes it tough for sloppy eaters like me. The tastes all go nicely together, I just would just wish it were a closed wonton as it would hopefully be easier to eat, with the majority making my mouth and not tipping over en route.

supermarket bar restaurant toronto kensington market chocolate molten fudge tart dessertThis was the first time I’d indulged in the dessert section of the menu, but it was a little chilly and called for something to accompany a warming up cup of coffee. Or at least that was the excuse to dig into the chocolate fudge molten lava tart. Moist, rich, divine – the apex being the chunk of white chocolate smack in the centre, it was the eye of the chocolate storm.

  1. I’ll be trying your choice of tart next time. Sounds right up my alley.
