ParaNorman is a phantasmically fun animated adventure of a little boy who’s always been a little different. Kids (young and old alike) can be cruel and his differentness – he sees dead people – brings on taunting, teasing, and fear. But when an ancient witch’s curse summons zombies to rise up from their graves, it is this little boy with his special abilities who is the town’s only hope.
The detail in the animation is absolutely amazing! (My favourite aspect of the movie were the details of Norman’s zombie-inspired bedroom decor.) One can be drawn in and become completely absorbed in the world created – which is filled with humans, ghosts, zombies, and a witch. Voicing the characters of this sleepy supernatural town is a star-studded cast lending their lungs, including Casey Affleck, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, Anna Kendrick, Tempestt Bledsoe, Alex Borstein and John Goodman.
The supernatural story pays homage to many mystery and horror flicks and tv shows, yet still maintains its own sense of originality. Fun for audiences of all ages…and even if zombies ain’t your thang, the impressive art of the stop-motion alone is reason to enjoy.
ParaNorman rises from the grave and into theatres on August 17th.
